About the Hanging Scroll
This work is created by renowned Japanese art director Kazunari Nagai,
who transforms Zen teachings and Zen phrases into three-dimensional forms using AI technology.
Zen phrases are traditionally expressed in ink.
In this work, they are first converted into 3D forms through AI technology.
By printing the depth, volume, and shadows of these three-dimensional forms
onto washi paper using lithography,
the work is returned once again to a two-dimensional format,
visually expressing both the profound depth and the simplicity of Zen.
Through a contemporary perspective,
this piece conveys the essence of Zen philosophy,
which has exerted a powerful influence on Japanese culture as a whole.
The scroll mounting is beautifully finished by skilled mounting artisans,
using silk kimono fabric.
Its refined, luxurious texture adds further depth and richness to the artwork.
This work is not merely decorative art.
It harmonizes Zen teachings with modern life,
offering a visual expression of Zen’s profound wisdom
as it can be felt in everyday living.
Even amid the busyness of contemporary society,
this piece holds the power to remind us
of the “stillness of mind” and the “clarity of focus” that Zen provides.
Chazen Ichimi (Tea and Zen as One)
A Zen phrase expressing the idea that the Way of Tea and Zen
ultimately seek the same state of mind.
In the tea ceremony, preparing a single bowl of tea
requires emptying the mind,
clearing away distracting thoughts,
and focusing fully on the present moment.
This act mirrors Zen practice itself,
as both cultivate heightened awareness and inner discipline.
The act of making tea is, in itself, a practice of Zen,
and the path of tea and the path of Zen are one—
sharing the same essence.
