About the Hanging Scroll
After many years devoted to mastering both Chinese and Japanese calligraphy,
Masunaga established his own distinctive technique known as “hashiboku,”
a dynamic method that subtly incorporates
not only painting,
but also the spatial aesthetics of Japanese culture—
including the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and ceramics—
within the written form.
With unwavering precision and without hesitation,
his brush runs decisively in a single stroke.
Through this movement,
his characters are infused with a vibrant sense of life
and a powerful yet graceful beauty.
In works featuring sports motifs,
dynamic motion is expressed with simplicity and bold energy.
In pieces inspired by nature,
the mysterious essence hidden within life itself
emerges vividly upon the surface of washi paper.
Masunaga is an officially recognized calligrapher
of the Nagano Olympic Association,
and is also known for expressing Japan’s traditional sport,
sumo,
through expressive ink painting.
