About the Hanging Scroll
Over the course of 1,200 years, Japan has absorbed many cultures from abroad.
Due to the country’s insular geography,
these influences were gradually refined and transformed,
ultimately forming a uniquely Japanese aesthetic.
In this work, architecture—constructed for diverse purposes
and shaped by Japanese philosophical thought—
is reinterpreted through the Western concept of composition.
Using the planar nature of photography
and the characteristics of light,
these structures are reconstructed once again within the frame of the camera.
This process serves as a visual re-examination
of Japanese aesthetic philosophy through the medium of photography.
