Contemporary ink painting artist.
Introduced to sumi-e at a young age through the encouragement of an art teacher,
CHiNPAN began working with brush and ink during elementary school.
From 1996, he devoted himself to the study of Rimpa-style ink painting,
and in 2008 was selected for an art competition at The National Art Center, Tokyo.

Working under the theme of “Destruction and Rebirth,”
he honors traditional techniques
while developing a unique form of ink through years of experimentation.
His practice explores expressions that engage in dialogue
with natural forces such as bleeding, absorption into paper, and gravity.

About the Hanging Scroll
This work is created using a specially formulated ink,
developed through years of research and refinement.
Rather than controlling the brush,
the artist entrusts the process to chance phenomena
such as bleeding and flowing ink.

Instead of drawing defined lines,
the artist listens closely to the spreading ink,
waiting for the presence of the dragon
to naturally emerge from within the composition.
It is as if the dragon itself appears,
cloaked in ink.

Capturing that fleeting moment,
this piece embodies a serene yet powerful expression of sumi-e,
where stillness and strength coexist in quiet balance.
