Mamimozi began practicing calligraphy at the age of nine
and decided to pursue the path of a calligrapher during high school.
Grounded in classical calligraphy,
he explores connections between traditional writing
and various contemporary cultures,
realizing numerous collaborative projects.
His activities have taken him across Japan
and to many countries around the world.

About the Hanging Scroll
“123456789” is a work by calligrapher Mamimozi
that expresses art transcending linguistic boundaries
through the universal symbol of numbers.
Having held solo exhibitions in three countries
and performed in eleven countries,
the artist has developed an international practice.
Through these experiences,
he came to feel that a shared symbol beyond language
was necessary for calligraphy to be fully understood,
leading him to choose numbers as the theme of this work.

Drawing from his own experiences in regions
with low literacy rates—where numbers were nonetheless widely recognized—
Mamimozi perceived the potential of numbers
as a means of communication that transcends culture and borders.
This piece presents a new possibility for calligraphy,
one that reaches beyond words.

The design also reflects a unique visual concept,
considering Western conventions of horizontal writing from left to right,
Asian traditions of vertical writing,
and the overall balance of visual beauty,
resulting in a composition that bridges multiple cultural perspectives.
